Here's How To: Improve your life in five minutes

Monday 11 August 2014

Life can be tough. And as much as that old phrase 'when it rains it pours' is a massive cliché and oh-so-lazy for a writer to use it in copy, the littlest thing in a string of bad things can ruin a week.

So, we've put together a few simple tricks and life hacks to make everything so much better and keep a smile on your lips. Each of these will either take five minutes of action or five minutes of thought. After all, what's five minutes in 1,440? Try one of these every day for a week and see just how it lifts your mood and brightens the week.

Compliment your co-workers for better morale
We spend far too much time with people we work with instead of friends, family and loved ones. If your colleagues are a bunch of lovely people you can have a laugh with, then count yourself lucky. If not, you can easily remedy the situation by giving praise here and there. We don't mean a sycophantic barrage of complements all delivered in one go. A kind word here or bit of praise there goes a long, long way and can inspire people to work just that little bit harder for you, or even champion you when you're in a bind. Especially important if you're a manager, or you work with someone new to the company.

Think of a co-worker and list something they've done that's helped you or your business. Next time you see them let them know. Even better, give them a shout out to your boss.

Clean as you work
After a long day at work, cooking is never easy (especially for me when Domino's sends Two for Tuesday emails all the livelong day), and the thought of washing up and clearing plates is enough to make me go hungry. However, cleaning up as you go along can save precious time afterwards. Chopped an onion? Throw the skin in the bin. Finished with the knife? Wash it straight away. that way you won't have a mountain of cleaning to do after the post-dinner coma hits, meaning you can settle in front of the telly.

This doesn't just work for food. Keep everything in its place at your desk in your home and the office. Rather than creating a vast floordrobe, put dirty clothes in the laundry and clothes that could have another wear back on their hangers. Basically, make sure everything has a place, and keep it there.

Drink water
Hydrate hydrate hydrate. Ok so it may entail a few mad dashes to the loo. But spending a minute throughout the day drinking a glass of water can not only help with concentration, but it'll make your skin glow too. Something as simple as feeling sluggish could be down to your body working overtime with no hydration - think what would happen to a car if the radiator was empty? The brain needs water to function reliably, and dehydration can cause damage to you. So step away from the vending machine, give the juice a miss, and instead gulp down a glass of water.

It's the best anti-ager around!

Eat lunch away from your desk
The weather's never guaranteed, so there's no point packing a picnic basket in the hopes of heading to the park if there's a chance it could hail/rain/snow. Whether you make your lunch the morning of work or you prefer heading to a shop for a sarnie, spend a few minutes in the morning looking for a different place to eat, and make sure you go there. London is fabulous for this. There's always a little green space somewhere, and a plethora of shops to visit. Where could you go?

Change of routine is good, as monotony can make life seem dull. So spending a few minutes in the morning planning a lunch away from your desk can really improve the working week.

Send someone you love a text
The world has never been more social. But how often do you speak to your aunty, grandmother, or best friend from school? Send a text to say hello and ask how they've been doing. It doesn't need to turn into an all-day conversation. But a little message to let them know you're thinking about them not only makes the receiver feel great, but you too.

Five simple things that won't take too much of your time. What do you do to improve your life?
