The top five awesome and moresome bars in Glasgow

Tuesday 1 October 2013
Ah Scotland. The land where deep fried Mars bars were invented, and rich, peaty whisky sits in ageing barrels just waiting to be sipped in front of a warm fire. For those two reasons alone we're huge fans of our northernmost counterparts.

So where better to enjoy a wee dram or cracking cocktail than Scotland’s second city? Glasgow is simply jammed with gems. Whether you're a Glaswegian by blood or just a tourist popping into town, Claire from DesignMyNight has collated and curated her top picks for the city.

Next time you're heading north, give these five amazing bars a try. And while you're at it, uni is free in those parts so maybe get a degree under your belt as well? (We're not jealous and resentful of all the awesomeness. Honest.)

Hillhead Bookclub | Vinicombe Street, West End

A den of all things cool and quirky in the heart of the West End, is Hillhead Bookclub. Located in an old converted cinema, the ceilings of this vast bar are adorned in ancient, ornate cornicing. Add the element of bygone nostalgia to gramophone cocktails, eighties computer games and err, ping pong, and you have yourself something of a mish-mashed hipster haven. But far from being packed with pretentious trendsters, this place is bucket loads of fun, with great eats, gorgeous cocktails, incredible DJs and some of the most offbeat events in town.

Cup Tea Lounge, Renfield Street, City Centre

We love a good afternoon tea here at six out of ten magazine. Add a little fizz, and we’re all yours. Cute-as-a-button tea shop meets cocktail bar, Cup Tea Lounge is one of our favourite haunts for a leisurely afternoon with the girls in Glasgow (or a drinks and dessert night cap on date night). Located in a 19th century listed building, this atmospheric cafe bar is beautifully decorated with original tiles and fancy fixtures. Come for the cupcakes and stay for the cocktails - be sure to try the Gorgeous Mr Grey, it’s well, gorgeous.

Hummingbird, Bath Street, Glasgow City Centre

One of the most cool, stylish, fun and multi-functional bars in Glasgow, is Bath Street beauty, Hummingbird. Three floors of gorgeous surroundings, each space and room with it’s own personality, from a karaoke room that looks like a mirror ball exploded in it, to a suave private penthouse with a pool table and its own bar. Whether you’re dancing, dining, drinking, or all of the above, this gorgeous bar knows how to deliver. Cool drinks, a quirky food menu and hefty doses of chic; we’re hearting Hummingbird. Big time.

Meat Bar | West Regent Street

A very cool recent addition to Glasgow’s thriving foodie scene, Meat Bar is a carnivore's dream. A stylish spot for a fun date, or a girly get-together with the more red-blooded of your posse, it’s all in the name when it comes to Meat Bar. The kitchen dishes up pork and beef delights from the in-house smoker, while the bar pours rib infused rum, and bacon-laced booze (try the Meatjito!). Not one for your bunny-hugger buds, but this chic Southern belle of a bar will win the rest of you over with sliders, steaks, sandwiches and eh, Suckling Sours.

The Social, Royal Exchange Square, Merchant City

If you’re looking for some al fresco tipples in Glasgow, look no further than cool Merchant City cafe bar, The Social. With a prime location, just metres from the bustle of Buchanan Street, The Social is the perfect retreat after a tough day in the office, or a tough day at the shops. With tasty bar food and gorgeous cocktails, this stylish bar, with lots of outdoor seating has all you need for an early evening bevvie in the summertime. Stay ‘til late as DJs take over, and dance and drink the night away under a canopy of fairy lights overhead. Bliss.
